Gum Disease Therapy

Gum disease is the primary cause of tooth loss for American adults. It has been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes complications, osteoporosis, low-weight births, and other serious health conditions. Many people don't even know they have gum disease because symptoms can be mild.

If you notice red, swollen, tender, or bleeding gum tissue, you may have gum disease, also called periodontal disease. In the early stage (gingivitis), simply changing your oral homecare habits might help. As the condition progresses, therapy may be needed.

Gum disease can be caused by medications, diseases, or, more commonly, from plaque buildup. When plaque hardens into tartar, it irritates sensitive gum tissue. Decaying food particles add to the problem, and bacterial infection – gum disease – can set in.

When you visit Smiles by Hale, a hygienist will inspect your teeth and gums for signs of problems. If you have gum disease, she may recommend:

  • Soft tissue laser for removal of bacteria and infection
  • Scaling to remove hardened plaque from below the gum line
  • Root planing to smooth rough areas on teeth roots, where plaque tends to accumulate
  • Arestin antibiotic treatment

To make your non-surgical gum disease therapy more comfortable, we apply Oraqix, a topical numbing agent that often replaces anesthesia injections. You may need a few appointments to complete your therapy. We'll also want to see you regularly (usually every three months) for a cleaning and checkup. With digital charting, we'll track your progress so that we can keep your gums healthy.

Dr. Hale and the Smiles by Hale team care for patients from Estero, Bonita Springs, Lehigh Acres, and beyond in our state-of-the-art Naples office. Call for your appointment today!
